There is an event coming up this week aimed at increasing home ownership in the southern part of Cape Girardeau.
The PORCH Initiative will host a resource fair from 5-7 p.m. on Thursday, November 17 at Shawnee Park Center.
According to the organization’s website, attendees will have the opportunity to ask questions of representatives from financial institutions, real estate and insurance agencies, contractors and non-profit community organizations. A meal will also be offered.
We are happy to see PORCH organize this event. Home ownership is an important part of community development. And we think an event like this could be very helpful for many families, providing a one-stop-shop to answer questions and start them on the path to owning their own home.
Increasing home ownership in the southern part of Cape Girardeau would have many benefits. Studies indicate that home ownership results in lower crime, increased civic engagement, and an opportunity for families to build wealth, among other benefits. Certainly, communities need quality and affordable rental options. But the increase in the number of families owning their homes would likely have a positive impact for the south side of Cape Girardeau and the town as a whole.
Those interested in attending the Resource Fair can reserve a spot by calling (573) 339-6346. More information about the PORCH initiative can be found online at www.capeporch.org.
